At the Oscars, many renowned celebrities, such as Cate Blanchett and Edward Berger donned blue ribbons on the red carpet. It conveyed a crucial message: to increase awareness about the ongoing refugee crisis.

Blanchett, the Australian-born actor, who was nominated for her brilliant performance in Tar, utilized the Oscars red carpet on Sunday as a means to draw attention to a crucial issue. She wore a blue ribbon over her turquoise and black Louis Vuitton gown, symbolizing her support for refugees and individuals who have been displaced worldwide.

In addition to Blanchett, Dolly De Leon, the producer of Triangle of Sadness, also showcased his support for the #WithRefugees campaign. Furthermore, Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front, and Bill Nighy, who earned his first Academy Award nomination for his role in Living, also wore the blue ribbons in a display of solidarity with the refugee crisis.

However, the Oscars weren’t the first event where celebrities proudly shared their solidarity towards the cause. At the BAFTAs, last month, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sophie Turner, Cate Blanchett, Paul Mescal, and Angela Bassett wore blue ribbons too.

During a red carpet interview with PA Entertainment at the BAFTAs, Jamie Lee Curitis mentioned, “My friend Cate Blanchett is asking people to remind us all in the midst of all the season of shiny things that of course there are terrible refugee crises going on all over the world everywhere all at once and we need to do our part.”

The blue ribbon signifies an important issue, prompted by devastating earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and Syria. As a result, there was an estimated 44,000 deaths, with countless others being displaced. Moreover, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to the displacement of approximately 8 million people.

Observing celebrities leverage their influence to bring attention to significant issues is inspiring. Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the earthquakes.
