Stanley Tucci on the “Tough Experience” of The Lovely Bones
Stanley Tucci opened up about his role in The Lovely Bones during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, explaining the difficulties which came with embodying a serial killer.
Stanley Tucci has become a beloved actor known for his stellar embodiment of a range of characters. He has acted in a multitude of fan-favorite films, such as The Devil Wears Prada and The Hunger Games franchise.
Recently, Tucci sat down with Entertainment Tonight and reflected on the characters he has portrayed throughout the years. During the conversation, the actor revealed that he would never want to reprise his “horrible” role in The Lovely Bones. In the 2010 film, Tucci starred as George Harvey, a serial killer. He received an Oscar nomination for his performance but did not win.
Tucci reflected on the role, sharing, “It’s a wonderful movie, but it was a tough experience. Simply because of the role.” He then went on to explain a conversation he had with the film’s director about the choice to cast him in the role.
Stanley Tucci is an amazing actor that i love to see on screen…He did an amazing job for the character he played as in Lovely Bones. That’s when you know an Actor is Really Good at their Job and the casting team picked a Winner. Ace those characters Mr. Stanley Tucci.

Tucci shared, “I tried to get out of playing the role, which is crazy because I needed a job. But I was like, ‘Why do you want me?’ And he said, ‘Because you’re funny.’ And I thought, ‘Okay.’ But I understand what he was saying. I think what he meant was that I wouldn’t be too — not that I wouldn’t be serious about it, but that I wouldn’t be overly dramatic about it. That I would throw it away a bit. Which is what you have to do when you’re playing somebody who’s that awful, right?”
Tucci concluded that in roles like that of The Lovely Bones, “You can’t play into it. Then, you know, it’s over. Like, the movie’s over. You just have to play against it.” Fans have shown their support for Tucci’s performance and have noted the difficulty that likely comes with embodying such an evil character.
He is such an incredible actor. He honestly terrified me, it wasn’t like watching an actor. It felt real. The movie is a tough watch, but I can’t help watch it to appreciate the amazing acting. I’m definitely glad they cut parts of the book out though.

During filming, he kept stopping and asking Saoirse if she was okay because he was so disturbed by what he had to do in the role and how young she was. She was fine, but he was more uncomfortable than she was from what I’ve read. And he still nailed the role perfectly.

Although Tucci would not return to the role of George Harvey, he expressed that there were some roles he would be glad to reprise. These include iconic characters such as Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada, which he called a “really great experience.”
Tucci’s latest project is Citadel, which debuts on April 28 on Prime Video. In the meantime, the trailer is available to watch below.
