The fifth installment of the beloved series promises the same level of high-stakes adventure while also providing some exciting new changes.
One of those changes is in the movie-making technology itself. The first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, premiered in 1981 when Ford was in his 30’s. Over forty years later, The Dial of Destiny will be utilizing de-aging techniques on the now 80-year-old actor.
In an interview, director James Mangold described the process of shooting the confirmed 25 minutes of de-aged Harrison Ford that will be included in the film. Mangold explained, “I just shot him, and he pretended that he was 35. But the technology involved is a whole other thing.” On the process, the director stated, “We had hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-ups, in mediums, in wides, in every kind of lighting, night and day.”
Another change to the latest Indiana Jones film is the addition of Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The Emmy-winning actress will assume the role of Indiana Jones’ goddaughter. The final, and perhaps most notable change for The Dial of Destiny, is the absence of Steven Spielberg at the helm, who directed every preceding Indiana Jones film. The Dial of Destiny is also the first installment of Indiana Jones that does not have a story written by George Lucas.
These new changes guarantee a fresh look at the legendary character, likely for the last time. Harrison Ford confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be the final reprise of his famous role, stating, “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character.”
In discussing the final chapter with his life-long character, Ford shared, “I always wanted to see a completion of the character,” adding, “I wanted to see him engage on one more unexpected, unanticipated adventure.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to debut on May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival, hitting theaters soon after on June 30. As anticipation builds, prepare for the premiere by watching the official trailer below.
