Fox News announced that it would be parting ways with host Tucker Carlson. This surprise announcement has left the future of the network up in the air.

Tucker Carlson’s career on Fox recently ended after 14 years with the network. Carlson joined Fox News in 2009 and was co-host of Fox and Friends Weekend from 2012 to 2016. Carlson’s nightly series debuted in November 2016. The series allowed Carlson to solidify himself as the network’s top-watched anchor.

Carlson’s final episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight aired last week. Fox News Tonight will take over the 8 p.m. timeslot as a temporary replacement, led by rotating hosts. According to Fox, this will continue until a permanent host is agreed upon. Despite his departure, Carlson remains a top-rated host for Fox.

In a statement, Fox shared, “FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor.”

Since the announcement of Carlson’s departure, Fox Corporation’s worth as a public company has sunk more than $500 million. Since markets closed on Friday, the company’s stock has declined 3.5%. This devaluation has raised questions about the future of the conservative network’s prime-time lineup.

The internet has mixed reactions to the news of Carlson’s departure. Some conservatives are upset by his departure, whereas others see it as a new opportunity for the anchor. Others online are grateful that Carlson is off the air, as he has shared dangerously hateful rhetoric during his time as an anchor.

Further, some have dubbed Carlson a “pseudo-journalist.” This claim has been referenced in part due to the defamation suit between Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems. An episode of Carlson’s program was even specifically cited as defamatory, spreading lies about the “stolen” 2020 election.

Carlson is currently a free agent in the cable news world, and there has been no confirmation of what network he plans on working with in the future.
