Disney Is Officially Working on a New Freaky Friday Sequel
Disney confirmed that a sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday is in the works. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are expected to reprise their roles, and Elyse Hollander is penning the script for the sequel.
Inspired by Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, the film Freaky Friday featured a captivating storyline where Lohan and Curtis portrayed a mother and daughter who unexpectedly switched bodies one fateful Friday. In the upcoming sequel, both Lohan and Curtis are anticipated to reprise their roles for the reboot.

During an interview with The New York Times, Jamie Lee Curtis shared that she was consistently asked about a sequel to Freaky Friday while promoting her recent film, Halloween Ends. “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made,’” Curtis stated.

This sequel would signify a comeback for Lohan, who was regarded highly in the 2000s era. However, in recent years, she has been experiencing a career resurgence. She signed a two-picture deal with Netflix, featuring the romantic comedy Falling for Christmas. Lohan stated, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
Curtis also talks about how the new plot could introduce a new generation to the Coleman family. “Well, she’s gotta be a grandma. I mean, I gotta be a grandma,” Curtis referring to her character, Tess Coleman. She added, “Just watching Lindsay try to be a grandma makes me laugh. And then me being a grandma trying to take care of toddlers makes me laugh, so I’m assuming it’ll be something, or it won’t be anything. We don’t even know yet.”
If you haven’t already watched Freaky Friday, it is available to stream on Disney Plus. To know more about the sequel, you can read the whole interview covered by The New York Times.
