Demi Lovato Releases New Single ‘SWINE’ to Empower Women
On June 22, Demi Lovato released her new rock single, “SWINE,” to address the circumstance of abortion rights in the United States.
Lovato’s new single was inspired by the Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle the right to safe abortions. The overturning of Roe v. Wade occurred almost one year ago on June 24, 2022. In releasing “SWINE,” Lovato hopes to empower women and protest the Supreme Court’s decision.
She wrote on Twitter: “. . . we must continue to be united in our fight for reproductive justice. I created ‘SWINE’ to amplify the voices of those who advocate for choice and bodily autonomy. I want this song to empower not only the birthing people of this country, but everyone who stands up for equality, to embrace their agency and fight for a world where every person’s right to make decisions about their own body is honored.”

In overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court gave each state its own say as to how it will tackle abortion rights. Across the United States, there are different levels of restriction for abortion and these rights continue to be a controversy a year later.
The chorus to Lovato’s new single sings, “My life, my voice / My rights, my choice / It’s mine (It’s mine) / Or I’m just swine (Or I’m just swine) / My blood, my loins / My lungs, my noise / It’s mine, or I’m just swine.”
“Swine”, or pig, refers to how the singer sees women being represented and perceived by the United States. She released the single to remind women to continue to unite. Rather than give up a year later on the controversial topic, Lovato dropped “SWINE” to protest and empower women. The song serves as a reminder to women that they should be in control of their bodies and that legislation should not.
The “SWINE” music video features the singer dressed in red standing between a group of women and a panel of men. The panel is meant to represent the Supreme Court.
Roughly halfway through the video, Lovato grabs the legislation paper from the panel and rips it in half, banding the group of women together in protest. Her video symbolizes the level of influence that women can achieve when they unite for a cause.
“SWINE” can be streamed on most major music platforms. The music video is available for viewing below.
