Michelle Zauner, who performs under the stage name Japanese Breakfast, promised fans in London an exciting update about new music. Before debuting her new track, she revealed, “I’ve been busy writing the next record. It won’t be out for a while … This last album has been full of so much joy, and I’m ready to go back to being moody again.”

Zauner reached critical acclaim after the release of the band’s third studio album, Jubilee. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. Jubilee was recognized alongside If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (Halsey), Daddy’s Home (St. Vincent)Collapsed in Sunbeams (Arlo Parks), and Shore (Fleet Foxes).

The band has kept busy despite their last record two years ago. The “Be Sweet” hitmaker revealed that her memoir, Crying In H Mart, had been green-lit to begin film production after getting picked up by Orion Pictures.

The quest of finding a director to tell Zauner’s story as a Korean-American was a difficult task, but finally, she chose Will Sharpe, who is best known for HBO’s The White Lotusto direct the film adaptation. She writes, “In that spirit, I am so relieved to have found Will Sharpe and am beyond delighted that he will be the director of Crying in H Mart. I believe his sensitivity, as a director and an actor, and his own personal experience, having also grown up between two cultures, will be tremendous assets.”

The actor is half-Japanese and half-British and lived in Tokyo during his childhood years.

Fans have missed music from Japanese Breakfast. Although there is not a release date in sight for the band’s next record, we anxiously await the news of more music. In the meantime, fans can secure a copy of her memoir, Crying In H Mart, now.
