Netflix announced the release date for the fifth film in the Spy Kids franchise, Spy Kids: Armageddon, with an action-packed teaser trailer.

The reboot stars Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi with newcomers Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla as the beloved Spy Kids characters. Like the previous Spy Kids films, Spy Kids: Armageddon follows a pair of siblings who are tasked with rescuing their parents after a failed mission.

The pair discover their parents’ spy hideout, when a hologram message from their mom appears to let them know “something has gone terribly wrong.” What ensues is a harrowing journey filled with elaborate gadgets, undercover jet planes, and the classic black jumpsuit-sunglasses combination.

When director Robert Rodriguez was asked by People Magazine if the film will tie back to to the initial series, he responded: “That’s top secret.” However, Rodriguez stated that the Spy Kids: Armageddon “rings more true now than it did 20 years ago.” Rodriguez also directed the hit sci-fi film, Alita: Battle Angel in 2019 and the four original Spy Kids films.

“We have a really fun new cast, Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi are so wonderful together, and our new Spy Kids Connor and Everly are simply magical,” Rodriguez explained. “They are super talented, and very fun to watch.”

The 55-year-old director has a deep connection to the franchise and how the films have been passed down through generations. “I’ve just heard from so many families how much they’ve enjoyed these films over the course of their lives. And now a lot of kids who enjoyed the first films as children are parents themselves and enjoy sharing them with their kids.”

Additionally, the filmmaker drew on his own life for inspiration for the franchise. “And personally, this series was based on my growing up in a family of 10 kids with an FBI special-agent uncle. These films were created by my family and me so, in a way, this is our James Bond series of films. We would just love to make them forever. They’re empowering for kids, and a bonding experience for families.”

Spy Kids: Armageddon comes to Netflix on September 22. Click here to watch the teaser trailer.
