On Friday, August 11, Olivia Rodrigo released her new song, “bad idea right?,” with its accompanying music video.

Rodrigo’s “bad idea right?” is the second single on her upcoming album GUTS, coming out on September 8. Her first teaser of what’s to come in her sophomore album was “vampire,” which was released on June 30.

“'bad idea right?' started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something,” the artist revealed in a statement. “We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall—in one of the choruses there’s a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it’s me gradually screaming louder and louder.”

Rodrigo’s stylist Danielle Goldberg revealed that the fashion inspiration for the video was inspired by the 90s movies Empire Records and Can’t Hardly Wait. Most notably, Rodrigo’s blue sweater is reminiscent of Liv Tyler’s iconic outfit in Empire Records

Attentive fans have also cited Glee, Euphoria, and American Psycho as possible references in the music video, though those suspicions have yet to be confirmed.

Rodrigo has made many nods to older films and television series throughout her discography, even mentioning Glee in her 2021 hit single “deja vu.”

In a Friday Instagram post, Rodrigo shared behind-the-scenes photos of the music video. She revealed in the caption that “bad idea right?” was made with songwriter and producer Daniel Nigro in New York City last year and elaborated that it was originally written for fun.

“I had such a fun time making this song with @dan_nigro in nyc last year,” she stated. “we wrote the chorus as a joke but we loved it so much we made it into a full fledged song lol!”
