Elon Musk indicates that X, formerly known as Twitter, is preparing to move to monthly subscription fees, charging its users to access the platform.

The owner of X and CEO and co-founder of Tesla stated that the small monthly service charge could help users fight off the operation bot. Musk bought up the idea in a meeting on Monday, September 18, that featured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Among a wide range of topics they focused on, antisemitism and artificial intelligence, the billionaire suggested X would charge its user base.

“We’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system,” Musk announced. Additionally, he asserted that such change is the only way he can think of to combat the bots on the social platform and claims that bots “cost a fraction” of a penny to set up.

According to BBC, Musk has always looked for users to pay for enhanced service, referred to as X Premium, which gives paid subscribers more features, such as longer posts and visibility on the social platform.

The idea of charging everyone on X is not new. According to Platformer, discussions about putting the site behind a paywall have been in the works for quite some time. Around this time, the company struggled to lure back employees laid off.

Musk and Netanyahu also discussed ways to protect free expression and fight hate speech on X. The CEO revealed that the platform currently has 500 million monthly users, posting between 100 to 200 million daily.

Users of the social platform expressed frustration over this new idea by Elon Musk and even threatened to leave the social platform altogether.
