Thunberg attended a mass protest in Amsterdam calling for more action on climate change a few days before their general election. According to the protest organizers, around 70,000 people attended the rally. In addition, Thunberg former EU climate chief, Frans Timmermans, also appeared at the protest.

The climate activist addressed tens of thousands of people. While she talked about the need for action on climate change, she showed her support for Palestine. Thunberg made it clear that there is no climate justice without social justice. “As a climate justice movement, we have to listen to the voices of those who are being oppressed and those who are fighting for freedom and for justice,” stated the activist.

Thunberg also invited a Palestinian and Afghan woman on stage to speak at the protest. Sahar Shirzad, an Afghan woman, revealed that Thunberg welcomed them on stage. “Basically, she gave her time to us,” explained Shirzad.

The man who wrestled the microphone from Thunberg’s hand exclaimed, “I came here for a climate demonstration, not a political view.” Thunberg told the unidentified man to “Calm down,” as he was booed by the crowd and dragged off stage. Even before Thunberg’s speech started, there was a small group of people waving Palestinian flags, chanting pro-Palestine slogans.

Thunberg also echoed the crowds’ chants of “No Climate Justice on Occupied land.”

Moreover, Thunberg was previously criticized for posting an image holding a sign stating, “Stand With Gaza.” The October 7 Hamas attack, which killed 1,200 people in Israel, resulted in constant bombardment of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military. The death toll in Gaza is over 11,000, a majority of which are children.

Thunberg’s now-edited “Stand with Gaza” post featured an octopus usually used by autistic people to communicate their emotions. People online accused the activist of being antisemitic and saw her pro-Palestine stance as a disregard for the lives of kidnapped Israelis. Thunberg issued a statement on X stating, “We are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn antisemitism in all forms and shapes. This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.” You can watch the video below.
