YouTube’s newest feature, a robot singer, can imitate popular music artists. YouTube has just announced its new artificial intelligence music experience it has been developing alongside Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence lab.

The most fascinating of YouTube’s AI tests has been the Dream Tracks in YouTube shorts. For it to work, a user must type an idea into the creation prompt and select one of the participating artists. And there you have it, it will produce an original song snippet of up to 30 seconds featuring the AI-generated voice of the selected artist.

Users can choose from a variety of artists like Demi Lovato, Troye Sivan, Charlie Puth, John Legend, T-Pain, Alec Benjamin, Charlie XCX, Sia, Papoose, and more.

Lovato recently released a statement on YouTube’s newest feature. “The development of AI technology is rapidly changing the way we navigate the landscape, and I believe as artists we need to be a part of shaping what that future looks like,” she explained. “My career has been about pushing boundaries… and creating the most interesting music for my fans. I am open-minded and hopeful that this experiment with Google and Youtube will be a positive and enlightening experience.”

As of now, Dream Track and other of YouTube’s early AI music tools are only available to a “small group of artists and creators,” YouTube explained. They further added that they were encouraging and looking for “feedback to inform future products and tools.”

Several other artists partnered with Google and YouTube have shared their excitement to be working on the project and contributing to the development of AI in the music industry.

In a statement provided by YouTube, Puth stated that “[he’s] extremely excited and inspired… YouTube has been a great partner in outlining its approach to AI and understands the need to work together to develop this technology responsibly, ensuring it will accelerate creativity instead of replacing it.”

When moving forward in the progression of AI, YouTube has released new regulations to protect individuality.

YouTube will now require creators to indicate when they’ve uploaded AI-generated content in hopes of removing content that “simulates an identifiable individual” or “mimics an artist’s unique singing or rapping voice” without permission.
