Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy talked on Variety’s Actors on Actors series about the unexpected blockbuster duo, “Barbenheimer”— Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Variety recently interviewed actress and producer Margot Robbie alongside actor Cillian Murphy in their Actors on Actors series. Robbie starred as the iconic Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s film while Murphy starred as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christoper Nolans Oppenheimer. Both films were released on July 21 this year. In Variety‘s Actors on Actors series, Robbie told Murphy that the “Barbenheimer” duo almost didn’t happen.

Oppenheimer producer Chuck Roven called Robbie, urging her to change Barbie‘s release date. Moreover, his claim was to avoid the films competing against each other.

Robbie pushed back and stated that the two films are in disparate genres that catch the attention of different viewers and film buffs. The different genres, brought in much profit into the smash box office since the Covid-19 pandemic hit back in 2020.

Murphy completely sided with Robbie and agreed that the dual release was a huge success and brought so much attention to both films despite being two completely different genres.

While Barbie was filmed to emphasize feminism and the gender roles within our society, as well as the beauty standards women are supposed to maintain, Oppenheimer was filmed from a historical approach. The film focused on the making of the atomic bomb during World War II, revealing the impact it had on past and present society.

Both films inspired watchers and left the impression that women’s voices are still not heard and their stories should be shared in a world that continues to be more focused on men. Robbie and Murphy have no ill will against each other and view their dual film release as friendly competition.

Murphy’s team directly requested a sit-down interview with Robbie before discussing the groundbreaking release of their films. Fans of both actors are admiring the interview and their outlook on the films and how it has impacted the film industry.
