Billie Eilish gave a message for anyone struggling emotionally at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards. The “Your Power” singer dedicated her Chairman’s Award for the Barbie single “What Was I Made For?” to anyone battling with mental health.

“I would really like to say that this award and any recognition that this song gets, I just want to dedicate to anyone who experiences hopelessness, the feeling of existential dread, and feeling like, What’s the point? Why am I here and why am I doing this?” she stated.

“I think we all feel like that occasionally, but I think if somebody like me, with the amount of privilege that I have and the incredible things that I get to do and be and how I have really not wanted to be here… sorry to be dark, d*mn, but I’ve spent a lot of time feeling that way. I just want to say to anyone that feels that way: be patient with yourself and know that it is, I think, worth it all,” she concluded.

However, the Grammy-winning artist has been open about her battles with mental health. During an interview with Apple Music, Eilish revealed how she went through dark times when she was neck-deep in writer’s block. It was to the point where any ideas for a song didn’t stick.

“And Finneas has always been the one that’s like, ‘No, no, no, let’s write. Let’s write.’ And honestly, we were in a period of time where we were both… like through this last winter, we’ve both been incredibly uninspired. And we’ve still been working and trying to make stuff. And honestly, that song was the first one we’ve written in a minute,” she shared.

When Barbie director Greta Gerwig had Eilish and her brother/collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, screen the movie, they finally felt inspired. Looking back on writing the song, the artist had a realization.

“I’m writing for myself, and I don’t even know it,” she revealed. “This is exactly how I feel, and I didn’t even mean to be saying it. I absolutely was writing about myself and I was thinking about myself from the perspective of a third person and I was thinking about myself objectively, which also made me feel really connected to her and me. Every single lyric is exactly how I feel. It’s about my life.”
