Nicki Minaj opened up about dealing with the loss of her father while being a new mother herself in a podcast with Ebro Darden on Apple Music.

Recently, Minaj sat down with Ebro, talking about her new album, Pink Friday 2, while reflecting on her father’s passing. The 41-year-old rapper revealed that her father called her a few hours before the accident that took his life.

Minaj revealed that she doesn’t answer the phone around her baby. However, that day, she picked up the call. “I answered and he was in a very good mood. He said, ‘Honey, can I fly out on Monday?’ He had been waiting for a long time for the opportunity to come and see me and help me. And I kept insisting, ‘Come on, come on over,'” she stated.

According to the rapper, she received a call from her mother a few hours later, stating her father had been in an accident. “She told me she didn’t know what was going to happen and that she would call me back.” Minaj continued, “And all of a sudden, everything started to spin. I can’t believe how fast it all happened. I hadn’t heard him so happy in years.” Minaj also stated that the first song, “Are You Gone Already,” of her new album Pink Friday 2, is about her father.

The rapper shared the lines from that song, “You’ve already made your peace with me. One day you’ll have to forgive Mommy. But she knows you know too much already,” were referencing her parents’ relationship. She also stated that “there is no relationship without accountability.”

The host questioned Minaj on how hard it was for her to share such personal emotions with her fans, to which she replied, “So scary. I think a lot, to be honest, I always feel I have give my fans — my core fans an update when I come back out with an album. The last two took a lot longer because of the events that took place between the albums.”

“I always feel I have to start somehow by telling them what has been going on so that they have a perspective, because they don’t,” she continued.

Minaj also opened up about the process of creating Pink Friday 2. Fans can listen to the full podcast here.
