Barbie is the first film awarded in the Golden Globes’ Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.

Barbie, the highest-grossing film of 2023, has another accomplishment to add to the list: a Golden Globe winner. At the 2024 Golden Globes, the film became the first film to ever win an award in the new category, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

The Warner Bros. film amassed a groundbreaking $155 million domestically and over $350 million globally the weekend of its premiere, making history as the first female-directed film to do so. As of September 2023, Barbie is one of the highest-grossing films in box office history, with a whopping $1.4 billion in revenue.

During the acceptance speech, Margot Robbie, the film’s producer and star, dedicated the win to “every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on Earth, the movie theatres.” Other cast members and crew joined Robbie on stage, including the film’s director Greta Gerwig, who thanked “all of the barbies and kens in front of and behind the screen.”

Robbie stunned the red carpet with yet another signature Barbie look. She worked alongside Armani to design the look inspired by the 1977 signature Superstar Barbie doll.

Three songs from Barbie were nominated in the same category. Brother and sister duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won Best Original Song for their song “What Was I Made For?” featured in the film. Other nominated songs included “I’m Just Ken” by Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson and “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa, Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, and Caroline Ailin.

Barbie also received nominations for Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Director of a Motion Picture, and other categories. The film, unfortunately, lost to other notable films such as Oppenheimer and Pure Things.

Barbie had a total of nine nominations in various categories, making it one of the most nominated films of the night.
