Jonathan Majors reacts to the backlash he’s received from his habit of comparing his romantic partners to civil rights activist Coretta Scott King.

After a whirlwind of a year, Devotion star Jonathan Majors seemingly hasn’t been able to catch a break. His most recent drama involves what fans deem to be an “unhealthy obsession” with civil rights activist Martin Luther King and his wife, fellow activist Coretta Scott King. On many occasions, the actor has referenced powerful women, such as Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama in accordance with how he needs his girlfriend to act in a public light.

In an ABC News exclusive, the 34-year-old actor called his current partner Majors and compared his current girlfriend, Meagan Good, to Coretta King. “She’s an angel. She’s held me down like a Coretta. I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh, but I think I’ve found her,” he stated. Many were bothered by this statement, including the youngest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Bernice King. She took to X, formerly known as Twitter, mentioning, “My mother wasn’t a prop,” where she linked an article that she wrote about her mother in 2017.

Although it comes off as some sort of fetish to some, Majors has recently told TMZ that he intended to convey the “utmost respect for Coretta Scott King, her achievements, and both her legacy and the one she shares with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King.” He went on to discuss that he and Good are both inspired by and deeply admire Coretta Scott King.

Majors first sparked outrage when using Mrs. Scott King’s name when a recording was released amidst his alleged assault trial of him speaking to his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari about going out for drinks with her friends. In the audio recording, he called himself “a great man” and criticized his ex-girlfriend for not having a “certain mindset” and stated, “Coretta Scott King, do you know who that is? That’s Martin Luther King’s wife—the woman that supports me—and — needs to be a great woman.”

A New York jury later found Majors guilty of two misdemeanor charges of reckless assault and harassment. His sentencing is set for February 6, and he faces up to one year in jail.
