The film follows three best friends, Zac Efron (Dean), Jermaine Fowler (Wes), and Andrew Santino (JT) who learn the time-old tale: Be careful what you wish for.

The trailer opens up with Dean picking up the phone with a simple “Stanicky, what’s up, man?” He proceeds to tell his friends and their spouses that Stanicky is going into surgery, and the wives encourage them to be there for their friend. The problem is that there is no Stanicky.

As a result, the guys have used the imaginary friend “Ricky Stanicky” to get out of any situation and go off on their own adventures for two decades. Their lie comes to a halt as their spouses begin to grow suspicious when they’ve called every hospital for their sick friend, and there’s no record of him anywhere.

To cover up their story, the boys enlist the washed-up actor Rod (John Cena) to stand in as their lifelong childhood friend. Rod, a.k.a. Ricky Stanicky, attends family gatherings, work events, guys nights, etc. The boys are thrilled to see that he’s not only doing his job, he’s excelling.

However, things take a turn when Rod/Stanicky oversteps his role, and suddenly it is more than just hired help. He ends up at the guys’ job and seems to integrate himself into every part of their lives.

All good things must end when the guys now start to wish they never created Stanicky, but they’re in deeper than expected since Rod refuses to leave. Rod talks about how he has no friends, family, or life; he finally has one, and he’s not going anywhere, although it looks like their loved ones may foil their plan soon.

Oh, and remember the photos of John Cena in a skirt that circulated on social media? We now know it was for this film, since in the poster, he’s dressed as Britney Spears in the “Baby One More Time” video. Nonetheless, the trailer is full of comedy, action, and angst; it’s safe to say viewers are in for a joyride.

Ricky Stanicky hits Prime Video on March 7. Check out the trailer below.
