This Barbie is a three-time Grammy winner. At the 66 Grammy Awards on February 4, the film’s accompanying soundtrack won three Grammys.

The three Grammys were for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Song of the Year categories. The latter are from Billie Eilish’s moving ballad, “What Was I Made For?” Eilish’s song was also nominated in three additional categories: Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video.

Eilish expressed her surprise during her second acceptance speech, “I was looking at everybody’s faces, and I leaned over, and I was like, not a chance!” She thanked her brother Finneas, who co-wrote with her, and Greta Gerwig “for making the best movie of the year.”

Backstage during a press interview, the “bad guy” singer revealed writing for Barbie was the source of much-needed inspiration. “To be real with you, we had been writing absolutely nothing before we had that opportunity to write for Barbie…but Greta came to us with this life-changing thing that we didn’t realize was going to be life-changing like that.”

When the Grammy nominations were announced in November 2023, Barbie the Album made history as the soundtrack with the most nominated songs in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category. The other tracks that helped the film reach this milestone include “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa, “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, and “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling. Gosling’s song also recently won Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards on January 14.

Barbie the Album leaves nothing to be desired, boasting a dazzling lineup of artists that also includes Lizzo, Sam Smith, Tame Impala, Charli XCX, PinkPantheress, and Ava Max. The soundtrack was executive-produced by Oscar, Golden Globe, and seven-time Grammy award-winning artist and producer Mark Ronson and Greta Gerwig. With over three billion streams globally, the soundtrack proves to be a hit amongst fans everywhere.

“What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken” were also nominated for Best Original Song at the 96 Academy Awards on March 10. With two out of the five categories’ nominations stemming from Barbie, the billion-dollar picture will likely add another accolade to its already impressive roster.
