On January 26, Megan Thee Stallion released “Hiss.” The single was packed full of scathing callouts of issues in the music industry. It also ignited a beef between her and fellow rapper Nicki Minaj. “Hiss” is home to the iconic line that started it all, “These h*** don’t be mad at Megan, these h*** mad at Megan’s Law.”
Since its debut, “Hiss” has skyrocketed to success. According to Forbes, the track led the streaming and sales charts, garnering 29.2 million streams in its first week and 104,000 downloads sold. Megan also released a few mixes of the song, including instrumental, clean, and a “chopped n’ screwed” version. These versions all counted towards its streaming and sales totals, Billboard notes.
Megan Thee Stallion is currently tied with Nicki Minaj for the most number 1 debuts on the Hot 100 for a female rapper. They have two under their belts, with three total No. 1 hits. However, “Big Foot,” Minaj’s response to “Hiss,” has not done as well on the charts. According to Forbes, it did not appear on the Hot 100’s top 10 songs. “Big Foot” was released later in the Hot 100 tracking week; however, it still ranked below “Hiss” on the Spotify and Apple Music charts.
Fans have loudly expressed their adoration for Megan’s single and its performance. “Megan Thee Stallion is blazing trails and breaking records! Her solo song hitting #1 on the Billboard Global 200 is a historic moment for female rap. Who else is celebrating this incredible milestone?” X user David Rodriguez stated. Since its release, fans have encouraged each other to stream “Hiss” across platforms to help it reach new heights.
Additionally, Megan Thee Stallion can add “Hiss” to her discography’s impressive background of charting successes. Her previous hit songs, “Savage” with Beyoncé and “WAP” with Cardi B, were also in the No. 1 spot in 2020.
