Pop Icon Sabrina Carpenter reveals she is currently working on a new album in a conversation with Stranger Things star Maya Hawke for Interview Magazine

Hawke asks, “Are you working on another album?” to which Carpenter succinctly replies, “I am.” This will be Carpenter’s sixth studio album, following the overwhelming success of her previous release, Emails I Can’t Send.

During the interview, Carpenter and Hawke also discuss the creation of Emails I Can’t Send, which became a viral sensation after its release in 2022. Their conversation allows insight into Carpenter’s creative process and the struggles she faces as an artist.

When asked about the instant success of her song “Nonsense,” Carpenter shares, “Sometimes I get insecure about pop music and the fact that it can’t always resonate with people. So it was really special for me to experience that song having its own life, maybe because it felt like the closest to my true personality, as silly as that sounds.”

Carpenter explains that the songs on the album felt more personal to her than her previous works: “I wrote most of the songs on ‘Emails I Can’t Send’ not intending to ever put them out in the world, because I don’t think I would’ve written those songs if I thought about other people hearing them.”

Part of Carpenter’s hesitancy towards releasing the album stemmed from her fear of being labeled as a “pop artist.” She expresses, “I don’t love the idea that a pop star is someone who makes catchy songs with easy-to-grasp concepts. It resonates with part of me, but I grew up with Stevie Nicks and Dolly Parton and Carole King and Patsy Cline, and that music didn’t necessarily feel like pop to me.”

Moreover, Carpenter feared being confined by a genre, but, through creating Emails I Can’t Send, she was able to grow as an artist. “ I feel a lot freer and more excited about what I’m making now because I’ve realized that genre isn’t necessarily the most important thing. It’s about honesty and authenticity and whatever you gravitate towards,” she explained.

Authenticity seems to be Carpenter’s biggest goal when it comes to creating new music, as she shares, “I like to keep my eyes and ears open for things that resonate with me because that’s what brings my world to life.” When asked how she chooses which songs make it to the album, Carpenter reveals, “I spend a lot of time with them, and the ones I still want to listen to after six months to a year, that feel like they’re still brand new, resonate with me the most.”

Although there is no release date known yet for the upcoming album, fans can get excited knowing that new music is in the works. While they wait, listeners can still enjoy Emails I Can’t Send.
