Jinkx Monsoon will return to Broadway this June to once again star as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago.

It was announced on social media on February 12 that Jinkx Monsoon would return to Broadway’s Chicago. The queer icon previously made history by being the first drag queen to ever portray the role of Mama Morton on Broadway when she debuted in January 2023.

Monsoon spoke about what the role means to her with BroadwayWorld, explaining, “Most of my life, and my entire artistic career— I have known the roles I would play well, but I also knew the industry was not yet giving actors like me the chance to prove it.” She continued, “Over the last decade, I, and queer artists like myself have been chipping away at the antiquated ideas of gender and performance— leading to my life changing run as Mama Morton in Chicago.”

Monsoon shares her excitement for coming back to the stage, stating, “During that one 10-week run, I learned so much about my craft and myself— and I cannot wait to take all of that back into this role and show.”

Fans will undoubtedly be happy to see her return, in part due to her amazing performances but also because of the representation she provides for the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. Monsoon, who previously broke box office records for the musical, demonstrates that not only can queer actors play these parts, but they can excel at them.

This announcement comes amidst a lengthy list of exciting news for the two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, which she initially teased on X by sarcastically writing, “not a lot going on at the moment…” The drag queen also announced that she will be hosting The Queerties, an award show that honors the LGBTQ+ community, and making her debut at Carnegie Hall on Valentine’s Day 2025.

And it looks like there is more thrilling news to come, with Monsoon tweeting out, “still more announcements coming.”

Audiences will be able to watch Monsoon onstage starting June 27. To see her at the Ambassador Theatre this summer, fans can buy tickets here.
