Gerwig launched her solo directorial debut with notable films, such as Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019). In addition to receiving critical acclaim, the two films gave Gerwig recognition for her work, later nominating her for several Academy Awards.
Years later, Gerwig is most notably recognized for directing the hit blockbuster film that ruled Summer 2023, Barbie. The film grossed more than $1.4 billion at the box office, making it the biggest movie of the year. The Barbie director is setting the bar for recognizing more female directors as she breaks records.
While Barbie was a smash hit at the box office and even secured Gerwig an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, she was snubbed out of the Best Director category.
Many fans were upset with the decision to exclude her from the category, but Gerwig is still grateful for the other nominations the film has secured and won awards for. “But I’m just happy we all get to be there together” Gerwig stated. As the director is still riding on the success of Barbie, Gerwig is also venturing into the world of starting new projects to tell even more stories.
"I want to make it feel like magic."

Gerwig is now tasked with exploring C.S. Lewis’ fantasy world of Narnia as she adapts the book series into an upcoming live-action film. Fans have high hopes when it comes to her vision for films, but Gerwig is terrified. “But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” Gerwig expresses.
She is also working on another fantasy project, being the co-writer for Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.
Gerwig is keeping herself busy this year, proving that female directors have just as much power and creative expression as their male counterparts. Sexism has been a main topic surrounding the world of directors, but Gerwig has been able to prove herself and rank amongst the greats.
Having been compared to and praised by Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, whose film premiered the same day as Barbie, Gerwig has no plans of slowing down or letting sexism rule the film industry. You can read Gerwig’s TIME article here.
