The “My Type” rapper, Saweetie, revealed in a recent interview that her album has been delayed because she doesn’t think anyone cares about her music.

“To me, music is sacred. It’s coming from your spirit. You can’t just go finish an album in a week. That’s why it’s taking me so long. That’s why I haven’t dropped an album yet,” Saweetie told Allure.

The rapper first blew up in 2018 with her song “Icy Girl” and since then has released other hit songs including “My Type,” and “Tap In.” She also released “Best Friend” featuring Doja Cat in 2021, which earned her a Grammy nomination for best rap song. Saweetie explained that the fame she received overnight gave her no time to develop as an artist. Moreover, the pressure she felt from her team, made her experience in the music industry difficult.

“I was told I should twerk more on my Instagram. I was told that my voice was very boring. I was told that I rapped too monotone and needed more energy. I was told that I needed to share more of my life on the internet,” the 30-year-old stated.

Saweetie continued to explain that she often felt torn between listening to her team and listening to herself. She felt her team cared more about her making viral songs than bodies of art she could stand behind.

The “Back to the Streets” rapper also added that she faced heavy criticism from the public who thought she didn’t deserve her success because she wasn’t talented.

“I don’t mean to dampen the mood, but this is, realistically, how my career has been. We were constantly criticized for every drop. I was just very insecure. I’m a confident woman, but I was a very insecure artist,” she expressed.

In addition, she also faced negative criticism about her on-stage performance to which she explained that it was not her strength, but she was working on it. All the negativity that the rapper faced from different directions led her to shave her head and go on a hiatus in 2022. During her time away from the industry she stayed away from social media, fired her team, and worked on her craft.

“When I’m in a vulnerable state, I don’t want to fight back. I don’t have the energy to be in that negative frequency. So, it was really hard for me to deal with being attacked so much by different people because I’m like, ‘Do I stoop down to their level, or do I continue to just focus on myself and this journey that I’m on?’” Saweetie expressed.

The public scrutiny and her acknowledging that the songs she had were not album-ready previously led to the delay of Saweetie’s album which she titled Pretty B*tch Music. The artist expressed the issues she has been dealing with, and fans are loving the artist’s honesty in the story.

The rapper stated, “There’s been a lot of times these past couple of years where I’ve given up on myself…and I don’t want to do that anymore.” Now recharged and ready to release her album with a new title, Saweetie is back. She is working with a new team and feels more confident in her art and is dedicated to remaining consistent with her craft.
