Our favorite celebrities have taken this season by storm with their iconic looks at premieres and award shows. In past years, artists and actors have walked the carpets in outfits that align with their brand and aesthetics.

This season actors have strayed away from personal style and tapped into the film’s universe to curate their ensembles. The concept, now coined “method dressing,” takes elements from the characters, plot, and overall design to curate a look that feels like an extension of the project.

Some outfits can be loosely based on the film but left up to the fans’ interpretation. In particular, Zendaya, who quite literally couldn’t wear a bad outfit if she tried, served so many beautiful looks on the premiere tour for Dune: Part Two. The outfits intertwined the film’s universe with high-end fashion.

Specifically, at the New York City premiere, the actress wore a white Stéphane Rolland Couture gown. The cutouts at the chest and hips fall to the knees, comparing the angular cutouts to the idea of sand dunes.

On the other end of the spectrum, some outfits look like they belong on the set’s costume racks.

Take Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour looks, for example. On every carpet, Robbie turned into a life-sized Barbie doll. She donned looks from the 1960 “Solo in the Spotlight” doll, 1990’s “Enchanting Evening” doll, 2015’s “Cherry Pie Picnic” doll, 1977’s “Superstar Barbie” doll, and many, many more.

Robbie’s looks on this tour were so divine. Even though we didn’t get one last Barbie-esque outfit, her stylist, Andrew Mukumal, is helping close out the Barbie era with the upcoming book, Barbie: The World Tour, helping us say “goodbye” to the fantastic life of plastic.

But when one era closes, another one begins. It seems as though Ariana Grande is now stepping back into the spotlight with a Glinda-esque aesthetic ahead of the Wicked films. On her first red carpet in four years, the “eternal sunshine” singer stunned in an adorable light pink gown, reminiscent of a bubble, to symbolize Glinda’s bubble from the World of Oz.

Wicked won’t take flight until later this year, and award show season is over. So, it may be some time before we get more character-inspired looks. Nonetheless, “method dressing” goes beyond promotion and instead takes on a life of heightened creativity that turns heads, provokes conversations, and encourages fun and freedom, which is essential when celebrating the arts.
