Randolph made history, with her first nomination and win for her work in The Holdovers. She received overwhelming support from colleagues, such as Lupita Nyong’o and brought the audience to tears with her acceptance speech.

The moment Randolph found out she won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role was extra special because Nyong’o introduced her nomination and eventual win.

Randolph was brought to tears over the occasion because they both attended the same drama school together and emerged in Hollywood around the same time. “She understands my journey. She understands what I went through when I was developing who I was as an artist,” Randolph shared.

Randolph was not the only actress to make history at the Academy Awards. Emma Stone received the Oscar for Best Lead Actress in the film Poor Things. This is her second time being nominated and winning the award after securing her first win for her performance in La La Land (2017).

In addition, Robert Downey Jr. also saw some success at this year’s Academy Awards. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Oppenheimer, one of the biggest blockbuster films of last year.

The actor opened with a lighthearted joke for his acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order.”

The cast and crew, who also took home Oscars, joined him onstage later in the evening. Cillian Murphy won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role, with director Christopher Nolan winning Best Director. This marks Nolan’s first-ever Oscar win after twenty-four years in the industry.

Oppenheimer stole the show at this year’s Academy Awards, dominating almost every category. The film won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Original Score.

While Barbie was a competing force against Oppenheimer for Best Picture, the film took home only one award. The film won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For,?” written and performed by Billie Eilish. This is Eilish’s second win, once again, making her the youngest Oscar winner.

Barbie still had a fun night at the Oscars despite only receiving one award. Ryan Gosling took the stage to perform “I’m Just Ken.” He was joined by fellow co-stars Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir, even bringing special guest Slash on stage to play the guitar.

It might be the end of an era for Barbie and Oppenheimer, most notably recognized as Barbenheimer, as the two films dueled at the box office. But both films successfully ran in theaters and on the red carpet. Receiving critical acclaim at awards shows and in pop culture, the two iconic films have made history alongside the actors and actresses winning at the Oscars.

You can watch both Oscar-winning films now, with Oppenheimer streaming on Peacock, and Barbie streaming exclusively on HBO Max.
