In 1989, Madonna took the music industry to a new level with her iconic album Like a Prayer. Thirty-five years later, she is still cemented as the queen of pop.

There is no doubt that Madonna is a symbol of the 80s due to her fashion influence, iconic songs that marked the decade, and counterculture ideals. And to end the decade on a great note, she released one of her most beloved albums, Like a Prayer.

Some of the most celebrated songs of the album include the album title “Like a Prayer,” “Express Yourself,” which became an LGBTQ+ anthem, “Cherish,” and “Oh Father.” Despite some songs getting more highlights, the album as a whole is still incredibly relevant.

Additionally, Madonna’s lyrics and statements, which were controversial at the time, still make sense 35 years later. She has always been a fighter for women’s rights, and back in the 80s, she was one of the first to do it.

Some examples include choreographies that were seen as too scandalous and would even get the police called on her. Also, she included AIDS information in the back of the album at a time when almost no celebrity talked about it, and she combated religious ideology many times.

In the music video for the album title song, Like a Prayer, she dances on a field filled with burning crosses, represents Jesus as a Black man, and tells the story of a girl whose only man in her life is God.

The queen of pop gets her title for the complete change she brought to the music industry. For instance, most of her songs are still a reference for new artists, and she still performs remarkable choreography. Furthermore, she has a style that changed fashion and modern ideals she always sticks up for.

On top of that, Madonna collects awards and has broken records to support her title. She has won around 430 awards, including seven Grammy Awards, 38 Billboard Top 10 charts, and two Golden Globe awards.

Her impact is still so grand that artists like Beyoncé, Adele, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift have had her as a reference in their careers and lives.

Madonna is on tour, The Celebration Tour, until April 26, with Bob the Drag Queen as a special guest. You can buy tickets for her Celebration Tour here.
