It has been reported that Margot Robbie will produce a film adaptation of the iconic life-simulation game, The Sims, and Kate Herron is set to direct.

According to InSneider, actress and producer Margot Robbie will transfer The Sims from the computer screen to the big screen. On March 20, it was announced the three-time Academy Award nominee is reportedly slated to produce a film adaptation of the life-simulation game, which ranks as the tenth best-selling video game franchise of all time.

Kate Herron, season one executive producer and director of Loki, is set to direct and co-write the film alongside screenwriter and actor Briony Redman. The duo have previously worked together, writing an upcoming Doctor Who (Season 14) episode starring Ncuti Gatwa. Herron also directed four episodes of Netflix’s Sex Education.

A live-action Sims film was originally announced almost two decades ago, in 2007, and was to be produced by John Davis with a script by Brian Lynch. The project never went into development and was eventually canceled in 2019 when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, who obtained the film rights.

Created by Will Wright and released in 2000, The Sims is a sandbox game that allows gamers to create their characters, or “Sims,” and micromanage every aspect of their lives, such as their homes, jobs, hobbies, and relationships. After losing his home in the Oakland firestorm of 1991, Wright was inspired to create a more life-focused version of his game, SimCity, released in 1989. As of October 2019, The Sims franchise has a lifetime sales total of over $5 billion.

Though The Sims contains in-depth lore with a non-linear timeline spanning the first three installments, the franchise remains open-ended, leaving endless possibilities for the film. Robbie starred in the titular role of Barbie in 2023, which had many curious about what direction the film would take upon the first teaser’s release.

LuckyChap Entertainment produced the film. Robbie co-founded the production company alongside her husband, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film went on to garner $1.446 billion worldwide, becoming a global phenomenon due to its fantastical sets, perfectly pink costumes, memorable performances, and comedic yet enlightening script about gender roles and self-worth.

While the film adaptation of The Sims appears to be in early development, Barbie is now available to stream on Max, and The Sims 4 base game is available to download for free.
