The HBO sensation Euphoria was expected to start production this year. However, filming has recently been put on pause for various reasons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Sam Levinson plans to use this pause to continue working on the drama’s script. With season three’s release still predicted for 2025, this pause will give him plenty of time to do so. Additionally, Euphoria‘s main cast—Zendaya (Dune: Part 2), Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You), and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn)—can take this opportunity to finish other projects first.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO spokesperson discussed with Variety. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.” Variety also states that this news follows an alleged report of the season getting scrapped, which has now proven untrue.

More speculation surrounds the reason for the delay. The SAG-AFTRA strikes and the death of Angus Cloud, one of the Euphoria‘s cast members, likely contributed to it. Plus, since the series catapulted many of its stars to Hollywood renown, their schedules can get difficult to navigate.

So far, all fans know about season three is its scheduled release in 2025. With season two’s release back in 2022 and the finale leaving audiences with questions, fans have started theorizing that the new season will take place five years in the future. Elordi joked about this theory in an interview with Jimmy Fallon.

“I’m assuming that we’ll have to go forward, otherwise it’s going to seem like a weird bit,” Elordi stated. “I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something. I’m going to have a bad back walking down the hallway, you know?”

Variety revealed that Euphoria is HBO’s second most-watched series behind Game of Thrones. Hopefully, the advent of season three will help the series uphold its stellar reputation.
