Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Set for Cannes World Premiere
After much speculation on whether the film will premiere, the Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will debut on the Croisette.
Coming to the silver screen worldwide starting May 24, the fifth installment in the Mad Max series will make its debut at the largest international film festival, just like the predecessor film Mad Max: Fury Road that crashed onto the Cannes red carpet in 2015.
The prequel will premiere May 15 at the Grand Theatre Lumière at le Palais des Festivals. This marks 77 years of the Cannes Festival and over a decade of the Mad Max prequel in the making. “The idea of this prequel has been with me for over a decade,” Director George Miller told Variety.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the adventures of the titular character Imperator Furiosa, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. The prequel will explore a young Furiosa before her official meeting with Max. Kidnapped at a young age, Furiosa was thrown into a dystopian world during a major war over gas and other resources. Also, spoiler alert: the film will also explore how Furiosa actually lost her arm.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the Festival de Cannes – along with Anya, Chris and Tom – to share ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.’ There is no better place than La Croisette to experience this film with audiences on the world stage,” Miller added.

Chris Hemsworth also stars in the electrifying science fiction film, co-starring as one of the film’s main villains. Fitting right into the Outback setting of the Wastelands, Hemsworth’s character is not one to be messed with. “He’s a complicated individual. He’s a very violent, insane, brutal person born from the Wasteland,” Hemsworth stated.
Miller is hopeful that the next installment in the series franchise will also be a hit, after breaking numerous records at Cannes back in 2015 when Mad Max: Fury Road premiered. Additionally, the film was highly ranked as a critical and commercial hit, scoring 10 Oscar nominations. It also holds the title of “one of the greatest action films in history.”
As for now, the Cannes Film Festival is thankful for their partnership and friendship with Warner Brothers in producing each Mad Max film installment as well as their loyalty to the festival in submitting their work. “The Festival de Cannes would like to thank the entire Warner Bros. Picture team- who will distribute the film worldwide- for their loyalty,” the company stated on its website.
Moreover, the 77 Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday, May 14, to Saturday, May 25. To view the official selection of films being announced on April 11, click here.
