Rachel Platten Gives Advice to Moms Experiencing Postpartum Depression
Rachel Platten recently revealed her experience with postpartum depression to PEOPLE at Audacy’s Leading Ladies event and encouraged other moms to ask for help.
“Having experienced it, unfortunately, personally, I really want to do as much as I can to help advocate for other moms so they don’t feel alone in that experience. It can be really isolating and scary and lonely. And I think the more that we are vulnerable and help each other and, you know, share our experiences and take our masks off, I think it allows us to feel the community and know that it’s not weird,” the “Fight Song” singer explained.
The 42-year-old is a mom to her 5-year-old, Violet, and 2-year-old, Sophie, whom she shares with her husband, Kevin Lazan. She has previously opened up about her battles with postpartum depression in 2021 and 2022. Now she aspires to advocate for other women who are experiencing similar struggles. Platten mentioned that she wants women to know that they are not bad moms but that help is available to them.
“I don’t want one other single mother out there to experience the same feelings of shame, loneliness, and fear that I did if maybe reading about my story now can help you because this can be hell if you think you’re alone,” Platten stated on her Instagram in 2021.
Additionally, the singer-songwriter talked about how the postpartum experience is not discussed enough so many mothers don’t know what to expect which further adds to their mental turmoil. Platten also apologized to her followers for hiding her struggles because she did not want to suffer publicly.
In her Instagram post from 2022, the “Girls” singer informed her followers that she was finally in a better place with her mental health stating, “I feel so proud of myself, I got through an incredibly painful battle with my mental health, long days that felt impossible and tears that wouldn’t stop coming and nights that felt never ending when my poor scared body wouldn’t let me sleep.
The singer recently released her song “Mercy” which she wrote when she was desperate for an escape and did so through her music. Platten expressed that she hopes her music will help others as it did for her, stating, “It is really important to share, and also not only share the pain, but share how I’ve climbed my way out of it.”
We send Rachel Platten and any women suffering from postpartum depression all the love and positivity. We hope that you can receive the care you deserve.
