On March 29, Lizzo took to Instagram to announce that she plans to quit music amidst online bullying and speculation.

Lizzo has had enough. On Friday, March 29, the four-time Grammy Award-winning singer and rapper took to Instagram, alluding to her departure from music.

The “About D*mn Time” singer wrote: “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little bit better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”

She continued, “I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout and views…being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look…my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name. I didn’t sign up for this s***. I quit.”

The announcement came the day after Lizzo performed at Joe Biden’s election fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Other performers included Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, and Lea Michele. Over $26 million was raised from ticket sales and donations. Gaza protestors inside and outside the venue rallied for a ceasefire in Palestine.

Lizzo first broke out in the music scene when her 2017 single, “Truth Hurts,” gained popularity two years later. She continued to rise to prominence with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You, released in April 2019. Lizzo performed at Coachella for the first time in 2019 and she embarked on her second headlining tour shortly after.

Cuz I Love You spawned hits, such as “Juice” and “Tempo” featuring Missy Elliott. The deluxe version of the album, released in May 2019, was nominated for Album of the Year at the 62 Grammy Awards in 2019 and won Best Urban Contemporary Album.

In 2022, Lizzo released her fourth studio album, Special. Her Amazon Prime reality programLizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, documented her search for new background dancers. Nominated for six nominations at the 74 Primetime Emmy Awards, the program won three Emmys, including Outstanding Competition Program.

In August 2023, three former background dancers filed a lawsuit against Lizzo, her production company, and dance captain Shirlene Quigley. The accusations included sexual, religious, and racial harassment, assault, weight shaming, and more. The singer requested that her former background dancer’s case be ended against her in February. Some of the charges were dismissed, but others, such as sexual harassment and racial and religious discrimination, were upheld.

Lizzo has yet to update fans after her initial post. Fans can follow her Instagram for updates.
