With a different director, Drew Goddard, Matrix 5 is coming to screens. The former director, Lana Wachowski, is returning as an executive producer.

The Wachowski sisters are the creative minds behind The Matrix franchise. Lily and Lana Wachowski debuted their careers in 1996 with Bound and reached fame with their second project, The Matrix, in 1999.

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Warner Bros. president of production, Jesse Ehrman told Variety.

Even though the information on the film is still limited, Warner Bros. announced the Matrix 5 is in development, with Oscar nominee Goddard as the director. This is the first time any film in the franchise won’t have one of the sisters in the position. The Matrix Resurrections from 2021 only had Lana as a director because Lily chose to step away from the series. Lana has stepped away from directing to take over as an executive producer.

There is also no information on the cast or a release date. The Matrix is known for having iconic casts, including main actor Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Laurence Fishburne. Newer additions to the cast include Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, and Christina Ricci.

“It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life, Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world,” Goddard stated.

In 2003, The Wachowski sisters released two new films back-to-back for the franchise, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The saga changed the industry and was one of the pinnacles of the cyberpunk movement in the film industry.

On top of all the awards they won for the series, The Matrix Reloaded, the second film of the franchise, held the spot of the highest R-rated grossing film for 13 years until getting dethroned by Deadpool in 2016.
