On April 10, Playbill announced the cast for the upcoming musical, Gatsby, based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was released in 1925 to great acclaim. Today, it is considered a literary masterpiece and a strong contender for the esteemed Great American Novel title. After four film adaptations, most recently starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan in 2013, and two theater productions, The Great Gatsby is returning to the stage.

According to Playbill, the American Repertory Theatre production of Gatsby will have its world premiere on May 23 at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Massachusettes. Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok penned the book, and Florence Welch from Florence & The Machine and Thomas Barlett composed the musical’s score. Tony-winning director Rachel Chavkin is set to direct.

Isaac Powell will star as Gatsby. Powell has numerous theater credits, acting in productions such as Mamma Mia!, Once on This Island, and West Side Story. He also starred in two seasons of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, American Horror Story. To celebrate the casting news, Powell took to Instagram, writing, “Been dying to get back onstage for the last four years. This had to be the one. Thrilled to be joining the company of @gatsbybway at @americanrep this summer.”

Charlotte MacInnes will portray Daisy, Gatsby’s former lover. Ben Levi Ross will embody Nick, a confidant to Gatsby and Daisy’s distant cousin. Ross portrayed the titular role of Evan in the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen on tour and acted as Freddy in the musical biopic Tick, Tick… Boom!, starring Andrew Garfield, which centers on the late composer Jonathan Larson. Cory Jeacoma will portray Tom, Daisy’s husband. Eleri Ward will act as Jordan, and Solea Pfeiffer will portray Myrtle. Pfeiffer also has an extensive theater history and recently starred in Tyler Perry’s Netflix filmA Jazzman’s Blues.

Gatsby has been in production since 2021. Another musical adaption of Fitzgerlad’s novel under the same name recently began Broadway previews on March 29 and is slated to open on April 25.
