The Movie Critic was shelved by Quentin Tarantino. The director and screenwriter decided to direct only ten films in his career.

In March of 2023, Tarantino announced The Movie Critic as his tenth project. It was reported Brad Pitt was to join the cast, returning as Cliff Booth. Pitt and Tarantino have a successful relationship. Their past projects include Inglorious Basterds and Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Deadline announced Tarantino was dropping the film on April 17. The Movie Critic was a story inspired by his job as a teenager and was to begin shooting this year. According to their sources, production was delayed because he rewrote the script. Eventually, Tarantino “simply decided” he would not make this his last film.

The two-time Oscar Award winner stated that he would direct only ten films. He believes that a director’s quality of directing dims with time. Therefore, he decided to limit his projects so that would not happen to his filmography.

Additionally, Tarantino scrapped the idea for The Movie Critic to return to one of his old projects. He has developed a large fanbase due to his high-quality films with a specific aesthetic. These fans took to the internet to discuss which past project he should bring to life. Some fans want him to make the third volume of Kill Bill, even casting Uma Thurman’s daughter Maya Hawke in the film.

On the other hand, some fans think his plan of having only a certain amount of films ends up trapping him. Additionally, he has chosen to do so to prevent from having a bad last project. Since there is such pressure to make an astounding career with an exceptional finish, it is understandable that the stakes are high for this final work. Consequently, Tarantino ends up limiting his ideas, blocking himself from creating incredible films.

Despite dropping The Movie Critic, Tarantino hasn’t announced which film will be his tenth and last project. In the meantime, you can stream his most recent film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, on Hulu.
