Fans believe Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo may have hinted at their appearance at fashion’s biggest night via Instagram.

The first Monday in May, also known as the Met Gala, is fast approaching. Annually, The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the Met Gala as a fundraiser for its Costume Institute, which contains fashion pieces dating back to the fifteenth century.

Each year, a new theme aligns with the institute’s exhibit and acts as a dress code for the prestigious event. A new Instagram post by Vogue has fans believing that Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will attend.

Erivo reposted the video to her Instagram story, while Grande liked the post. This year’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” refers to “treasured garments in the museum’s collections that are so fragile that they need to be housed in special glass ‘coffins’ rather than on magazines,” according to USA Today.

2024 Met Gala Theme

Vogue, which will live-stream the red carpet on its website, stated the dress code is slightly different under the name “The Garden of Time.” Drawing inspiration from a 1962 short story of the same name by author J.G. Ballard, the magazine suggests attendees embrace the “garden” aspect through motifs such as “melancholic florals.”

With Wicked‘s fantastical costumes and sets, this year’s theme complements the two witches perfectly. Since embracing her inner Glinda the Good Witch, Grande has donned floral dresses, seemingly paying homage to the poppy fields on display in the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, which Wicked partially serves as a prequel to.

In February, the “we can’t be friends” singer took to Instagram to share stunning images of herself in a custom Oscar De La Renta floral mini-dress with individually hand-sewn flowers. At CinemaCon in April, Grande wore another Oscar De La Renta dress from his Spring 2024 collection.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo at Previous Met Galas

Both Grande and Erivo have attended previous Met Galas. Most recently, Erivo attended in 2022, and the theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” The evening’s official dress code was “Gilded Glamour and White Tie.” The imminent EGOT recipient wore a white lace Louis Vuitton dress with a feathery train. A regal, white head wrap paid homage to Louisiana history, particularly the tignon law.

Implemented in the late eighteenth century, the practice instructed Black women to cover their hair. Stylist Jason Bolden and Erivo decided to explore ideas of “self-made glamour,” Vanity reports. “In Black culture, what you’ve watched so many people be able to do is to [turn] hardship into something that becomes desirable, fashionable, and iconic,” Bolden explained.

Grande attended the Met Gala for the first time in 2018, and the theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Wearing a custom Vera Wang gown with the Sistine Chapel and a bow in her hair, the exhibit’s theme paired well with her single God is a Woman, which was released as the second single from her Grammy-winning album Sweetener two months later.

Though neither actress has yet to confirm their attendance, their liking of Vogue‘s post and iconic red carpet moments are enough for fans to get excited for Monday’s event. On May 6, you can stream the Met Gala red carpet on Vogue’s website to see your favorite celebrities take on this year’s theme.
