As of May 2, Universal Music Group and TikTok have struck a deal. Here’s what you need to know.
On May 2, Universal Music Group and popular social media app, TikTok officially reached an agreement about the future of music on everyone’s favorite platform.
The company posted the news on social media, with a picture of the recent terms. They stated “We would liked to thank each of our artists, songwriters and label partners for your patience and understanding over the past few months. Your steadfast support alongside the wider music community has been integral to reaching an agreement that better rewards and protects artists and the value of their work.”

The post was titled “Successful Renegotiation of TikTok Relationship.” It stated “We are pleased to update that negotiations for a new deal with TikTok have resulted in an agreement and music and music from UMG artists’ and songwriters and administered catalogs will be available on the platform shortly. We are happy to say this is a multi-dimensional licensing deal that will deliver significant industry-leading benefits for UMG’s global family of artists and songwriters and labels including: industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI, improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities, strengthened online safety protections, and improved songwriter and artist attribution.”
