Nintendo President Confirms New Switch Successor Coming Soon
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced that a successor to the beloved Nintendo Switch is coming. The Japanese video game company plans to reveal the new console by March 2025.
On May 7, Furukawa shocked the internet by revealing plans for a follow-up to the Nintendo Switch. The businessman announced the news in a social media post on the company’s official account, writing, “This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.”

Since Nintendo’s fiscal year runs from April to March, further news about the project is expected by March 2025. “It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015,” the executive continued. Nintendo first announced the popular game console back in 2015, later releasing it in 2017.
Since then, the corporation has also put out Lite and OLED models of the Switch. Approaching almost a decade of success with the game system, the company is now ready to innovate once again. In addition to the exciting news, the tech company president shared plans for a new Nintendo Direct this June. Fans last received a live stream from the game console creators in September 2023.
The upcoming broadcast will provide updates for the current console. Furukawa emphasizes, “We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
The “Switch 2,” as fans nicknamed the new system, has been long anticipated. Rumors swirled online about the possibility of a successor for many years before its official announcement.
