Riley’s mind adapts to a new equilibrium, marked by Joy and Sadness finding harmony. A conspicuous “PUBERTY” button looms in the control room, hinting at upcoming challenges. Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, teases this shift, “After all, Riley’s 12 now. What could happen?” The possibilities are endless.

Inside Out 2 explores them by introducing several new emotions into Riley’s headquarters, ready to shake up her world once more. This development mirrors the profound changes that come with adolescence.

Poehler tells Empire that the process of emotional evolution never truly ends and she hopes there’ll be many more Inside Out movies to come, reflecting that journey. She states “I just think that they should make these films like Seven Up, every couple of years in Riley’s life.”

Additionally, Poehler asserted,  “A young adult, and a young mother, and I think a middle-aged person – everyone’s having these very distinct new emotions that are showing up all the time.”

The idea is intriguing—imagine a Linklater-esque exploration of one individual’s life, presented through the lens of Pixar’s storytelling. Certainly, the expectations for Inside Out 2 are incredibly high. The original film is one of Pixar’s most cherished and acclaimed creations, a sentiment echoed by the team behind its success.

Poehler recalls her experience in filming Inside Out. “It was super-emotional, and I felt so proud to be in it,” she asserts after seeing the finished product back in 2015.

Moreover, she claims it was the best film she’d ever starred in. Despite the pressure, Poehler has no reservations about aiming to recapture the magic in the sequel.

“This is where Joy and I dovetail,” she shares. “You can’t let that fear stop you from action. You have to act. What Joy would say about it — and what I would too — is, ‘What are you going to do? Not make it, because you’re afraid it’s not going to be good? We just have to do it.'”

The film is expected to release on June 14, in the meantime, you can watch the first film on Disney+.
