‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Sequel in the Works
On May 9, Prime Video and MGM Studios announced that there will be a sequel to its romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue.
Director Matthew Lopez confirmed the news during a post-screening Q&A at The Culver Theater in Los Angeles, California. In an Instagram post, the interviewer asked, “Is there going to be a sequel一like, are you working on anything?” Lopez revealed, “Yes, there’s going to be a sequel.”
Based on Casey McQuiston’s New York Times bestseller novel of the same name, the first film follows the romantic relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz, the first son of the United States, and Prince Henry, as they go from enemies to lovers in the public eye.
McQuiston sat alongside Lopez during the Q&A and explained, “Matthew and I are writing [the sequel] together.”
The film’s stars, Taylor Zakhar Perez (Alex Claremont-Diaz) and Nicholas Galitzine (Prince Henry), also attended the post-screening Q&A. According to Variety, both are confirmed to reprise their roles in the sequel.
Galitzine is coming off the heels of co-starring in the Prime Video film adaptation, The Idea of You. The actor stars as 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of a boy band who falls in love with Solène, a 40-year-old single mom portrayed by Anne Hathaway.
Perez acknowledged the sequel announcement in an Instagram post of him signing teaser posters. He expressed, “Well, this should be fun.”
Due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which took place from July 14 to November 9, 2023, the cast did not go on a traditional press tour to promote the original film. Instead, Prime Video shared bloopers, deleted scenes, and previously recorded promotional material of the cast on its YouTube channel.
Additionally, Red, White & Royal Blue won Queer Fan Favorite at the 35 annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York.
Although official dates and plot details have yet to be announced, fan accounts have already begun posting content and sharing their thoughts. One account promoting the sequel on Instagram exclaimed, “A Red, White & Royal Blue sequel officially in the works at @amazonmgmstudios. We won!”
