Now, let’s digest some of the reviews. Furiosa is a prequel to the Mad Max series that has been thirty years in the making. This time, the film centers on a female protagonist, named “Furiosa” who appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road portrayed by Charlize Theron. Anya Taylor-Joy portrays a younger version of the character as she navigates the wastelands on her journey back home after being kidnapped.
Furiosa + Anya Taylor Joy are nothing short of outstanding. For Joy to take on this role must have been emotionally taxing and only those who can truly empathize will understand her sacrifice and the emotional toll of this film. Our very own Editor in Chief Nikki Fowler had the honor of being invited to the film’s screening, praising director George Miller’s attention to women’s emotional and physical sacrifices. The film’s visual effects and plot were also appealing, leaving the audience speechless. Highlighting the brutal and violent nature of the wastelands featured in previous installments rounds the film out.
Other reviews agree that Furiosa is action-packed and a joy ride for film-lovers. “Furiosa engulfs you. At times it almost seems to exceed the canvas of the IMAX format it is THAT big – and yet at times has a deeply affecting intimacy. Echoing cinematic elements from the ‘50s through the ‘80s, it’s a rich, smart vision the cast revels in.” Simon Thompson, a journalist at The Wrap, complimented.
Taylor-Joy is also receiving great praise for her portrayal of “Furiosa,” bringing a different sense of depth and complexity that has not been explored yet in previous films. “Great news, Furiosa is a masterful examination of one of the greatest characters of the last 20 years.” BJ Colangelo, Slashfilm, praised.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 28 minutes, Furiosa is nothing short of a thrill ride as it is the franchise’s longest-running film. Not to spoil too much, but the powerful duo of Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth electrify on screen, causing a powerful shift from Fury Road. Oh, and Chris Hemsworth portraying a insanely brutal villain of the wastelands? Sign us up.
Until Furiosa makes its official debut in theaters nationwide, you can stream previous Mad Max movies right now on Hulu before traveling into the wastelands again on May 24.
