Minecraft is the most popular video game in the world, selling over 300 million copies in its lifetime. It is a sandbox game where players survive in an unfamiliar world, build unique structures, and create their own stories from its signature blocks. The game continues to receive regular updates to this day, adding new content. In addition, fans create updates through millions of modifications, or “mods,” to the game.
As of 2022, Minecraft-related videos have amassed over 1 trillion views on YouTube. In addition, the platform created several videos commemorating Minecraft stars, such as the deceased YouTuber, Technoblade, who passed away shortly before the game reached its 1 trillion view milestone.
Despite its sandbox nature, Minecraft is no stranger to more story-driven adaptations. In 2016, Telltale Games released Minecraft Story Mode, starring Patton Oswalt, Catherine Taber, and Ashley Johnson. It served as a narrative-driven take on the original game.
Moreover, various content creators can develop their own stories on YouTube with the game. These series, which often take place in multiplayer worlds, have been incredibly popular with audiences, especially during the pandemic.
Furthermore, a live-action Minecraft film will be released next year, starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge. However, unlike the film, this Netflix series will be animated. Wildbrain Studios, who produced Netflix series such as Sonic Prime and Ninjago: Dragons Rising, will develop the series.
Not much else is known about the series, except that Mojang Studios is closely collaborating with Netflix on the details. With the recent trend in higher-quality video game adaptations, such as The Last of Us and Fallout, it is no surprise that Minecraft wouldn’t be far behind.
If you have somehow not played Minecraft, you can find it on the game’s website. You can also view the announcement for the series below.
