Ceasefire: Dua Lipa’s Glamorous Life and Powerful Stand for Palestine
Despite her glamorous lifestyle, Dua Lipa has not let the glitz and glamour of fame and fortune blind her to the calls for a ceasefire in Palestine.
In a recent story on her Instagram, the popstar spoke against the current injustices and unnecessary violence of Israel’s attack on Palestine. “Burning children alive can never be justified. The whole world is mobilizing to stop the Israeli genocide. Please show your solidarity with Gaza. #AllEyesOnRafah,” Lipa shared on her Instagram account, with 88.2 million followers.

The ongoing genocide against Palestine didn’t occur overnight, nor did it start on October 7 last year, but rather it has been an ongoing war against the Palestinian people for decades. The continuing violence against the Palestinian people originates near the end of the nineteenth century.
In 1947, the Israeli and Palestinian states divided due to the United Nations enactment of Resolution 181, otherwise known as the Partition Plan. This called for the division of Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, with Jerusalem governed as an international entity. The Jewish community saw this as a legal basis for establishing Israel, while the Arab community rejected it, leading to immediate violence, ranging from 750,000 to two million of the population being displaced.
The current climate surrounding the call for a ceasefire is dividing the United States. This is a leading cause of the incarceration of college students protesting and demanding the severance of pro-Isreali products and profits. The University of California and Columbia University range between 200 arrests and detainments across campus. Furthermore, City College of New York arrested and detained 173 college students protesting. The current political conflict concerning Palestine has led to many institutions resorting to silencing the active voices of inspiring minds.
Several celebrities, such as Dua Lipa, have shown support and advocacy towards Palestinians, mainly through social media posts and donations towards supporting the many displaced men, women, and children. Of the celebrities calling for a cease-fire for Palestine, the fashion model and activist Bella Hadid’s immediate call to action, relating to her relationship with displacement, the “After Hours” singer and songwriter Kehlani’s disdain in the current silence surrounding the war, and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega ridicules lack of ceasefire after Rafah airstrike.
