The Marías released their second full-length album, Submarine, on May 31, following the band’s six-month hiatus. The fourteen songs address heartbreak, loneliness, and concern for the future, all tied together with lead vocalist Maria Zardoya’s dreamy signature sound.

It’s no secret why this album focuses on matters of the heart or why the band took a break: Maria Zardoya and drummer and producer Josh Conway called it quits after eight years together. A weaker group wouldn’t have been able to withstand such a devastating blow, but the Marías are no such band.

The group opened up to GRAMMY.com about each member’s inner work to move forward. They shared that they healed with the help of therapy and time with loved ones. This led them to realize the importance of the creative project they shared. Zardoya stated, “Through all of that work that we did, we realized that the music is so important. We have so much to say, and what we have to say is important.”

The way the band has regrouped and returned stronger than ever is inspiring. To share the emotional process behind the album, the Marías began a docuseries entitled Submarine Diaries, which features interviews with each member, intermingled with thematic visuals. The aquatic theme of the album is continued in the series, creating a cinematic level of aesthetic unity. The vision propelling Submarine is crystal clear, from the sound mixing to the promotion– reflecting the group’s close-knit relationship.

Seeing so much of a group’s artistic process is a rare delight, but The Marías have even more in store for their devoted fanbase. On June 2, they threw a surprise show in Los Angeles, thrilling the lucky fans who could attend. One such fan shared the setlist via X, to the envy of many.

But for those who couldn’t make it, all is not lost—The Marías kick off their international tour on June 11 in Mexico City. They’ve made great waves as a bilingual group, releasing hits in English and Spanish. They collaborated with Bad Bunny on the song “Otro Atardecer” from his acclaimed album Un Verano Sin Ti.

The Marías clearly have a bright future ahead, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next. You can stream their new album, Submarine on all streaming platforms.
