On June 2, the “Not My Fault” rapper had a surprise in store for her fans in Atlanta, where she was performing a concert as a part of her Hot Girl Summer tour. On stage, Megan excitedly turned her fans’ attention to the stadium screens, which displayed the new album’s cover art and a QR code to pre-save the album. “My new motherf****ng album, MEGAN,” she announced, “is coming out June 28.”

The upcoming self-titled album has been highly anticipated by fans, along with anyone who has been keeping up with music news and rap beef discourse this year. Megan’s single, “HISS,” made history by becoming one of only three solo female rap songs to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

A few pointed, though unspecified, lines in the hit single also sparked a volatile feud between the “Body” rapper and Nicki Minaj. The latter released a single of her own titled “Big Foot,” as a response to “HISS.” The anger that fueled this viral controversy, Megan asserted, does not coincide with the overall tone of the upcoming album. “I’m not really focused on the negativity on my album,” the rapper shared in an interview with L’Officiel USA. “I have a lot of different songs on the album because my emotion doesn’t stop at anger…You get a little bit of everything.”

The new album’s cover art was received with mixed reactions. The cover art, designed by Dave La’Chappelle, depicts the rapper emerging from a large cocoon, appearing as a monarch butterfly from the inside. The cocoon is hanging from a tree inside a futuristic room, with a large letter “M” in the background. Some fans criticized the butterfly motif, as Megan’s recent singles, “HISS,” “Cobra,” and “BOA,” hinted at a more reptilian theme.

The rapper states that both the butterfly and snake symbolism point towards the album’s true theme — rebirth. “We don’t just stop at the snake,” she shares. “Renewal, rebirth: that is the whole concept of this [album]. We started with the snake because…Snakes represent rebirth, spirituality…it’s kind of like an antihero.”
