E. Lockhart announced the adaptation of her young adult novel We Were Liars into a television series premiering on Prime Video.

Staring Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair, the eight-episode series follows “A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.”

The book focuses on the elite Sinclair family. Cadence and her cousins, Johnny and Mirren, along with Gat Patil, parade around their family’s private island off the coast of Massachusetts every summer. After a horrible accident, Cadence suffers from severe migraines, leaving her bedridden most days. As the summer prolongs, secrets start to unravel, and readers are left wondering if Cadence will discover the truth.

Alongside Lind, the main characters are Joseph Zada, Esther McGregor, and Shubham Maheshwari. The cast also includes Candice King, David Morse, and Wendy Crewson, as well as Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, and Arsher Ali.

Bringing the story to life, Carina Adly MacKenzie and Julie Plec (producer and writer of The Vampire Diaries) will be at the head of the writing and executive team. Furthermore, Emily Cummins and E. Lockhart are also said to be executive producers.

The New York Times Best Seller posted updates on her Instagram expressing her excitement about the announcements of the cast. The bookseller quotes, “Hauntingly mysterious and completely captivating, We Were Liars is a story of incredible wealth, privilege, and, of course, the many layers of deception that come along with it. This gut-wrenching tale comes complete with a jaw-dropping twist readers will not see coming.”

The physiological thriller published by Delacorte Press in 2014 has sold 3 million copies since its release. Fans who loved the book are delighted to see their favorite characters on screen. The prequel, Family of Liars, published in 2022, takes readers back to where it all began, with another generation’s secrets revealing that the Sinclair will always be liars.
