Given Chappell Roan’s new achievement, it’s safe to say that your favorite underground queer pop artist is not so underground anymore.

You’ve most likely heard her songs while scrolling on TikTok, but Roan’s latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” has just entered the top 20 on Global Spotify for the first time. The single currently sits at number 20 and has reached a new peak in daily streams with 3.321 million.
But, how exactly did she get to this point? What seems, to us, like an “overnight” success has been years in the making.
Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz in rural Missouri to a devout Christian and conservative family, the artist told The Guardian in late 2023 that she’s known that she wanted to break into the music industry ever since childhood. In 2017, at just nineteen years old, she signed with Atlantic Records.
But, in August 2020, amidst the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Roan was dropped from the label due to her single “Pink Pony Club” supposedly underperforming. She packed her bags, moved back to Missouri, and started working at a drive-thru coffee kiosk to make a living.
The “Casual” singer vulnerably revealed, “I felt like a failure, but I knew deep down I wasn’t.” So, she moved back to L.A and signed with a new record label. Now, she has nearly 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
In September 2023, Roan released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess. The album has garnered her the title “Queen of Gay Pop” and made it onto Pitchfork’s Top 50 albums of 2023.

Roan is embarking on her “Midwest Princess Tour,” but is also set to play at several music festivals this summer, such as The Governor’s Ball in New York City, Lollapalooza in Chicago, and Outside Lands in San Francisco. Her fans are thrilled.
