The Apple TV+ limited series is eight episodes long and initially premiered on June 9 at the Tribeca Film Festival. Gyllenhaal portrays prosecutor Rusty Sabich alongside Ruth Negga, Lily Rabe, and Gyllenhaal’s brother-in-law Peter Saarsgard. The series is the second adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1988 bestseller, the first of which starred Harrison Ford.

Presumed Innocent follows Sabich (Gyllenhaal) as he is accused of brutally murdering a woman he was having a torrid affair with and working with. The victim is a fellow prosecutor named Carolyn Polhemus. Portrayed by Renate Reinsve, her flashbacks reveal her past involvement in a case with disturbing similarities to her own. The dramatic suspense incited by these worrying parallels fosters more unease about Rusty’s innocence.

Negga depicts Sabich’s horrified wife, Barbara, while Chase Infiniti and Kingston Rumi Southwick are their two children. The Sabich family’s feelings of doubt, horror, and betrayal drive the plot forward, exposing more of Rusty Sabich’s lies and desperate struggle to maintain his innocence.

Gyllenhaal, who is also an executive producer, shared with Deadline that the plot’s angle was of particular interest to him. At the series’ Tribeca debut, he stated “as brilliant as the writing and the acting is in the courtroom scenes, [he] really thinks it becomes like its own courtroom, too, in the house.” A recent tweet from Apple TV+ showcases this fraught inter-family drama.

The clip shares a scene from one of Rusty and Barbara’s couples therapy sessions, featuring Lily Rabe of American Horror Story as their therapist. Rusty, caught in yet another lie, urgently declares that he is not a liar. He unconvincingly concedes that he lied about having an affair, “but, like, only that.” It’s fascinating to watch an accomplished actor of Gyllenhaal’s caliber deliver lines unconvincingly.

While Rusty’s delivery may often feel unconvincing, it’s certainly not always without conviction. In Apple TV+’s trailer for the series, Gyllenhaal states “I did not kill her” about a dozen times, and we’re left wondering if he didn’t do it, who did?

Joining Gyllenhaal as executive producer is J.J. Abrams, the illustrious filmmaker behind projects like The Office and Lost.

Apple TV+ confirmed that Presumed Innocent is available to stream with this tweet, and we couldn’t be more excited. Check out the trailer below.
