Following the events of “Espresso,” the singer finds herself in jail. While speaking to Vogue on the concept of the “Please Please Please” video, Sabrina states, “I liked the idea of falling in love with a convict and being shocked and embarrassed every time he commits crimes.”

The singer channels her inner mob wife as she picks up her belongings, including red lipstick and bold sunglasses. While ignoring the guy at the counter, Carpenter locks eyes with her love interest, Barry Keoghan.

The “Feather” singer supports him as he eventually is let out of jail. Chaos ensues as she supports Barry’s antics which involve kidnapping a man and robbing a bank.

Somehow he gets arrested again and the pop star helps him escape, only to put duct tape over his mouth and handcuff him to a chair.

While discussing casting Keoghan as her love interest, Carpenter states, “I was sooo lucky to get Barry Keoghan in the video cause he is just magic on screen.” Director Bardia Zeinali mentions, “[Barry’s] so nice and kind and so adorable, and so charming, which is so important in the video. You have to believe and understand why this person is falling for the chaos over and over again.”

Ron Hartleben (Carpenter’s stylist) and Zeinali also spoke to the outlet, discussing the making of the “Please Please Please” video. In terms of fashion, Hartleben discusses, “She’s the boss, so she would wear something as va va boom or dramatic as an Alaïa hooded dress. She has the confidence to wear it and is unafraid to be a standout.”

Zeinali expresses how the pop star’s outfits keep changing to show her character’s evolution, whereas Keoghan’s character remains stagnant, hence his style doesn’t change much. The singer consistently wears thigh-high stockings (a Carpenter staple) to show how she will always return to her lover.

Fans might notice some pop culture references throughout the video. The director wanted to reference popular chaotic couples like Pamela [Anderson] and Tommy Lee, Sid and Nancy, Madonna and Dennis Rodman, and then in the films Natural Born Killers and a bit of Thelma & Louise

He states, “These stories about two people who are on the run or on the road, the dynamic shifts in which one person becomes more submissive and the other more dominant, where the accomplice becomes the person in control and in power, which is what happens in the video. She’s getting dragged into these chaotic situations and in the end, there’s a final moment, this last straw, where she takes control.”

Despite the music video picking up where “Espresso” left off, the video itself has more of a darker feel. He expresses, “[Sabrina’s team] knew that they wanted to have a bit of that kind of wink and sense of humor that she’s known for now, but they still wanted something—and I hate to use the word edgy—a little bit darker to contrast the sweetness of the song. What she says in the song is very beautiful and sweet, and at face value it has this very kind of airy, almost doll-like feeling. But then she says “motherf*cker” and there’s this aggression and a toughness, and that’s something I wanted to explore.”

“Please Please Please” already shows signs of becoming another hit for the singer. She has already replaced herself at #1 on U.S. Spotify, taking down her other hit, Espresso. To celebrate the single, the pop star has released new merchandise on her website, which you can shop for here.
