R&B singer-songwriter Victoria Monét released a music video for “Alright” on June 11.

Before the video’s release, Monét shared a teaser where she goes to the “Jaguar Cinema Premiere” of the music video. The “On My Mama” singer is seen wearing a thriller-inspired varsity jacket while Nicole Kidman’s iconic AMC commercial plays in the background.

In the teaser, the blue theme is very intentional. Monét explains, “Alright has always sounded dark blue to me! I just went with my gut.”

The “Alright” music video was announced during the singer’s Coachella set. Throughout the video, the three-time Grammy winner pays homage to several pop/R&B legends like Missy Elliott, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Hype Williams’s film Belly, and Michael Jackson. The multi-hyphenate channels the King of Pop by imitating his classic style and dance moves from his 1988 video “Smooth Criminal.”

In another scene, the “Smoke” singer recreates the Queen of Radio’s 1990 “Alright” video by remaking the classic pinstripe zoot suit and imitating Jackson’s choreography.

Later in the video, Monét brings us back to “I’m a Slave 4 U” as she mimics Spears’s dance moves while wearing a blonde wig paired with a white tube top and skirt. She also recreates the rain scene that was present.

In a statement, Monét explains, “‘Alright’ is about liberation and freedom at its core! This video is a visual presentation of that sentiment through freedom of movement and fluidity between masculine and feminine energy. It was an honor to work alongside Dave Meyers and Sean Bankhead and this cast on this visual! What a crazy combo!!”

At the R&B star’s premiere party, the songwriter expresses, “There’s no better month to release this visual than Pride Month, Black Music Month, and the beginning of summer ’24! I can’t wait to see where dance artists and the ballroom culture take it.”

“Alright” has been well-received by fans as the video is currently trending.

The music video was directed by Dave Meyers and choreographed by Sean Bankhead, who was also the choreographer for “On My Mama.” Both of them expressed their gratitude over the video’s release.
